DO IT FOR YOU

May 29, 2017

Wait. If you think my decision to wake up every morning and grind was to hear that I was pretty, I'm going to stop you right there. I need to explain something.
.
.
When I was at my heaviest... when I was obese (not chubby or fluffy or overweight. Clinically obese) and over 300 pounds, I was teetering on the edge of pre-diabetes. I had hypothyroidism and blood pressure problems. The fat around my midsection made me an almost inevitable candidate for heart disease. I was barely 20 and, at best, heading down a road of medications, diseases, and disorders for the rest of my life. At worst, I was killing myself. .
.
My decision to get healthy wasn't for "society" or someone else. It wasn't for the "before and after". It wasn't to conform to the internet or Instagram's version of attractive. It wasn't to make people struggling with their weight feel bad or judged. It wasn't to look like the girls in the magazines, on the runway, or in the "fitspo". My decision was to live disease and health issue free. My decision to get strong... that was for me.
.
.
We don't live in a society of "unattractive people". We aren't facing an epidemic of people being less than desirable. That isn't the problem. We are facing a health epidemic. We are slowly and effectively shortening our lifespans and quality of life. We're becoming dependent on medications, on prescriptions, on diagnoses. We're struggling to climb stairs, to play with our kids, to catch our breath. I know because I've been there. We're doing it willingly. That has to stop. We have to stop saying it's about being pretty. We have to start realizing it's about being healthy. We have to stop telling people that we will validate them. That they'll be pretty or worthy or accepted if they lose weight... if they aren't fluffy... if they look good in a bikini. We have to start saying that they'll live longer. They'll feel better. They'll be stronger. It's not about what we look like. It's not about what people say or whether people approve of us.
.
.
Don't get strong for them. Get strong for you.
